their accomplishments from the previous year - and lay out their agenda for the year ahead. and while there's certainly going to be a lot of that, officials say obama plans to focus on the broader, more long-term issues facing the country - long after he's left office.mcdonough says: "what the president is going to lay out is a picture of the country moving forward. focus on the future, not afraid of it and very optimistic about our future because of what he knows about this country." the white house hasn't offered specifics he'll cover, but the recovering economy, environmental issues, and the war on terror have been constant themes throughout obama's term. we can also get some ideas of what he'll discuss by looking at the guests he's invited. on friday, the president announced he will keep an empty seat next to the first- lady on tuesday to represent victims of gun violence - an issue that's at the top of his agenda for his final year in office. also invited to sit with the first-lady is a syrian refugee - who the president called an inspiration, after his story was featured in the popular blog "humans of new york." congressional republicans though, aren't expecting there to much meaningful substance in the address.mcconnell says: "well, look, the president is going, i assume, to talk about the future and try to paint a rosy picture where one does not exist. what we'd love to hear from the president is a real plan to defeat isil." and we can expect to hear more on that shortly after the president's address, when south carolina governor nikki haley delivers the g-o-p response. in washington, i'm garrett tenney, fox news. custom tags:lea & heatherharris ericarthelcustom in:lea &
